Hello Kimberly! I read and just reviewed your YA novel The Headhunters Race, but tell us all sorts of stuff about yourself!

- – -

Thank you so much for having me!

What is your book about?

My book is about sixteen-year-old Avene who has been thrown in prison for a crime she didn’t commit and the only way to win her freedom back is to enter the deadly Headhunters Race.  She has to fight off cannibals, animals, and travel over 150 miles to catch a killer and bring his head back in order to win.

How did you come up with the story?

I was inspired by a Zelda game commercial and wanted to write a really cool and interesting adventure.  I love survival stories and so of course it had to be a survival story as well.

Which of the characters do you most identify with and why?

That’s a tough one but I guess maybe Avene because she has gone from being fairly sweet and innocent to having everything pulled out from under her and has had to toughen up as a result.  I think we all sort of go through this in life and have to adapt and deal with the circumstances that are dealt to us.

What is your writing process like?

My writing process changes all the time.  Sometimes I’ll write in spurts and sometimes it just dribbles out.  Sometimes I write with most everything outlined and sometimes I don’t have much outlined (seat of the pants style).  I love it when I get those spurts though; it makes me feel good to get a lot of words written.  I also love the revising part a lot more than the getting the first draft down.  So you could say my writing process is really to just go with the flow.  :)

What do you snack on when you write?

Chocolate!  Or those gummy Lifesavers!

What are some of your favorite books?

I have a ton of favorite books – too many to name, but a few are the Nancy Drew Mysteries, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and most recently, The 5th Wave.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I work a day job and spend time with family and our funny dog.  Nothing too exciting – wish I could say otherwise.  :)

Again, thank you so much!

Kimberly

Book Summary

Sixteen-year-old Avene was sentenced to prison at thirteen for a crime she didn’t commit. Now she has a chance to win her freedom back – if she enters the Headhunters Race. Second prize isn’t so bad either, an upgrade to the Leisure Prison if you make it to the finish line. To win either prize, Avene and the other prisoners must navigate one hundred and fifty miles of dense forest, desert, and worst of all, cannibal territory.

With a mechanical collar timed to strangle the prisoners if they’re not back in nine days, Avene allies herself with seventeen-year-old McCoy, another prisoner that insists on helping her at every turn and a boy she’s trying hard not to fall for. Together they battle nature, other prisoners, and the timed death collars to win the coveted prize. But when Avene is tested with one deadly conflict after another, she realizes there is more at stake than winning her freedom – first she has to survive.
